The Earth Moved
The work was hard; he had been digging all his life. The rewards were meagre, but enough to sustain his diminutive body. At least he had fulfilled his purpose in life, by producing offspring. They could be anywhere now, also condemned to a life of digging, moving earth.
He heard movement above, a vibration which wasn’t natural, fear made him freeze and listen intently.
The spade came down.
Excruciating pain, then nothing.
